Baron Schwartz, CEO of VividCortex, spoke to us recently about PGConf Silicon Valley:

Terry: Baron, thanks for speaking with us today. For the benefit of our readers, would you mind telling us a bit more about your background, and also, when did you first become involved with PostgreSQL?

Baron: I'm a software engineer by training and trade, but always biased towards the database. Databases are fascinating; what they do is so much more difficult and interesting than typical systems. I became involved with PostgreSQL in the mid 2000's around the time I was being recognized as a MySQL expert. I've always been better known for my contributions in the MySQL arena, partially because of my highly visible community involvement (such as writing bestselling books and widely used tools). But I've worked in several other communities like PostgreSQL as well, usually behind the scenes helping with conferences, reviewing books, and other things I think are highly valuable to the community. With a limited amount of time and attention I've always sought to do the most good with the resources I can offer.

Terry: Your session is titled, "Analyzing PostgreSQL Network Traffic with vc-pgsql-sniffer." Who should attend it?

Baron: I think the right audience for this talk is going to be DBAs and developers. I love it when we break down that silo between them. We all say DBAs are responsible for database performance but doing that creates an organizational bottleneck. It's an inefficiency. A lot of my work over the past several years has involved encouraging people to get production visibility enterprise-wide into what their databases are doing. This breaks down so many time-wasting, specializing bottlenecks in IT. And so I'd love it if developers as well as DBAs come to the talk.

Terry: Are there any sessions in particular at the conference that you are eager to attend?

Baron: I'm personally interested in attending "Sharding and Scaling PostgreSQL with pg_shard" with Jason Petersen from Citus Data.

Ryan Lowe & John Cesario from Square's talk, "Postgres for MySQL DBAs,” also looks going -- both of them are really good speakers with broad experience.

Another is "What's New in PostgreSQL 9.5." Magnus (Hagander) is always a really good speaker.

And finally the TripAdvisor use-case, "At The Heart Of A Giant: Postgres At TripAdvisor," with Matthew Kelly looks very interesting.

Actually the entire schedule looks very good.

Terry: Thank you for speaking with us, Baron.
